Spray Foam Insulation – Tiny House (KS)

Case History GacoOnePass Tiny House Manhattan KS Photo

Situation:
Frustrated with the lack of availability of affordable housing, Brandon Irwin set out on a quest to build himself a tiny house on wheels. His mission was not only to provide a cost-saving roof over his own head, but also to raise awareness for the Tiny House Movement and the concepts of sustainability, minimalism and affordable housing for all who desire it. Brandon and a team of colleagues started with only a set of plans purchased online and made his dream a reality.

As part of the overall “green” construction plan, Brandon needed a spray foam insulation option that would cut down on his heating cooling needs, while at the same time being safe for the indoor air quality of a confined space.

Unique Characteristics:
As indicated by name, tiny houses have very small spaces. This makes spraying foam installation a tricky task – maneuvering in this confined space and doing quality work at the same time would be a challenge.

Solution:
GacoOnePass Closed Cell Foam proved to be the best choice to insulate the tiny house ceiling. GacoOnePass is an insulation, air barrier, vapor retarder and thermal break all in one which leads to reduced material costs. The exceptional sprayability and adhesion of GacoOnePass allow it to adhere smoothly and consistently, even in hard to reach places. This, coupled with the fact that it is a low odor foam, makes it ideal for installation in a confined space. GacoOnePass is ABAA evaluated, can contribute to the reduction of moisture, improve indoor air quality and acoustical isolation. GREENGUARD Gold certification signifies that GacoOnePass has been tested and certified to be compliant with stringent chemical emissions guidelines set by UL Environment, and that it meets some of the world’s most rigorous, third-party chemical emissions standards.

Installation Details:
GacoOnePass was installed quickly in a single 4” pass to insulate the entire ceiling. Special maneuvering was required to spray into the loft area – the applicator had to lie on his back to complete this portion of the job. The end result is a beautifully insulated ceiling that will help contribute to a lifetime of energy efficiency for this tiny home.
